Dairy Shed Size Calculator
Enter your animals to get the covered area, open paddock, manger length and water trough length for a loose-housing dairy shed.
Your herd
Example: a 10-cow farm with 4 young and 2 older calves.
Each adult cow needs 3.5 m² under the roof and 7 m² of open yard. A 10-cow shed needs about 35 m² covered and 70 m² open, before calves and a calving pen.
Space per animal
| Animal | Covered (m²) | Open (m²) |
|---|---|---|
| Adult cows | 3.5 | 7.0 |
| Adult buffaloes | 4.0 | 8.0 |
| Young calves | 1.0 | 2.0 |
| Older calves / heifers | 2.0 | 4.0 |
| Bulls | 12.0 | 24.0 |
| Calving pen (one animal) | 12 | 12 |
Manger: 60–75 cm per adult, 40–50 cm per calf. Water trough: 6–7.5 m per 100 adults.
From area to a real shed
Once you know the area, choose a shape. A long, narrow shed with the manger along one side is easiest to clean and feed. For a ready-made layout with measurements, see the 10-cow dairy farm shed design.
- Run the long side east to west in hot areas, so the roof shades the animals for most of the day.
- Give the floor a gentle slope to a drain, with a rough, non-slip finish.
- Keep clean water available all day, inside the paddock.
- Leave room to grow: many farms add animals within two or three years.
Questions farmers ask
How much space does a cow need in a shed?
Indian housing standards give each adult cow 3.5 m² (about 38 ft²) of covered area and 7 m² (about 75 ft²) of open area. A buffalo needs 4 m² covered and 8 m² open.
How much space do calves need?
Young calves need about 1 m² covered and 2 m² open each; older calves need 2 m² covered and 4 m² open.
How long should the manger be?
Allow 60–75 cm of manger per adult cow or buffalo, and 40–50 cm per calf, so every animal can eat at the same time.
How many calving pens do I need?
Plan about one calving pen of 12 m² for every 10 adult animals. Irish dairy advice plans calving space for 10% of the herd.
Is this enough for a free-stall barn in the US or Europe?
This calculator uses loose-housing standards from India. Codes in other countries can ask for more, for example 9.3 m² of resting area per Holstein cow in Canada's dairy code.
